The Strawberry – A Japanese Story

There once was a man.

(Bir zamanlar bir adam vardı.)

A wild tiger was chasing him across a field.

(Vahşi bir kaplan onu tarla boyunca kovalıyordu.)

At the end of the field there was a cliff.

(Tarlanın sonunda bir uçurum vardı.)

The man caught hold of a vine to escape the jaws of the tiger

(Adam kaplanın ağzından kaçmak için bir sarmaşığa tutundu)

and swung himself over the edge of the cliff.

(ve uçurumdan kendini saldı.)

Swinging down,

(Aşağıya salınırken,)

he saw fearfully that there were more tigers on the ground below him!

(korkuyla gördü ki aşağısındaki zeminde daha çok kaplan vardı!)

And, also, two little mice were chewing on the vine that he was holding.

(Ve, ayrıca, iki küçük fare tutunduğu sarmaşığı kemiriyorlardı.)

He knew that at any moment he would fall to certain death.

(Her an kesin bir ölüme düşebileceğinden emindi.)

That’s when he noticed a wild strawberry growing on the cliff wall.

(İşte o zaman uçurumun çeperinde yetişen yaban çileklerini farketti.)

Grasping the vine with one hand,

(Sarmaşığı tek eliyle kavrayarak,)

he picked the strawberry with the other

(diğer eliyle çileği kopardı)

and put it in his mouth.

(ve ağzına attı.)

He never before realized how sweet a strawberry could taste.

(Daha önce hiç bir çileğin tadının bu kadar güzel olabileceğini farketmemişti.)
